In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, UAE authorities have thwarted the efforts of an international gang attempting to smuggle narcotic pills valued at Dh3.87 billion. This operation marks the largest-ever seizure of banned Captagon tablets, with the gang’s audacious attempt to transport 13 tonnes of these pills concealed within 651 doors and 432 home décor panels. Dubbed ‘Operation Storm,’ the Dubai Police successfully intercepted the scheme, leading to the arrest of six suspects who were caught red-handed while attempting to smuggle the drugs inside five shipping containers. This operation has effectively dismantled what authorities describe as an “international criminal cartel.”

Captagon, a drug known for its addictive nature, was initially developed in the 1960s to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but was subsequently banned due to its harmful effects. Criminals continue to engage in illegal production and smuggling of the drug, often concealing it within various types of shipments. This latest interception underscores the UAE’s unwavering commitment to combat drug trafficking and protect its citizens from the devastating consequences of such activities.
