The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has introduced a crucial federal decree law for 2023 aimed at regulating the weights and dimensions of heavy vehicles on the country’s roads. Suhail Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of this law in enhancing road safety and security. This legislation carefully outlines and specifies the permissible weights, dimensions, and heights for heavy vehicles operating on UAE roads, including those licensed in foreign countries, ensuring that the total maximum weight per vehicle, including its load, does not exceed 65 tonnes. However, heavy vehicles owned by security and military agencies, as well as those affiliated with the police and civil defense departments, are exempt from this regulation.
The implementation of this new law is set to commence at the beginning of the year 2024, with the weight limit capped at 65 tonnes per vehicle, including the load, on all UAE roads. The law officially takes effect on October 1, 2023, but a four-month grace period will allow companies and truck owners to adjust to the new regulations. Enforcement and penalties for violators will be enforced starting February 1, 2024, with a comprehensive evaluation of the law’s impact scheduled for December 2024. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure, transportation, and logistics sectors, ultimately contributing to economic prosperity and road safety in line with the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision.
