Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , the Crown Prince of Dubai, embraced the festive spirit of Onam by partaking in the celebrations and sharing a vibrant feast on Tuesday. The Instagram Stories photo posted by Sheikh Hamdan showcased the iconic Onam sadya – a vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf – capturing the essence of the Keralite festival.

Onam, a significant harvest festival in Kerala, commenced on August 20 this year, marked with enthusiasm across the South Indian state and by Malayali communities worldwide. Sheikh Hamdan’s participation highlights the cultural significance of the festival that transcends religious boundaries. The UAE is home to a thriving Malayali community, making up a substantial portion of Indian expatriates in the country. Onam’s popularity extends beyond its Hindu origins, as people from all walks of life in Kerala engage in festivities, featuring flower arrangements known as pookkalam, traditional attire, and performances like the snake boat races and Kummati Kali dances.

The Crown Prince’s involvement in the celebrations underscores the harmonious multicultural tapestry of the UAE, where diverse traditions find a place to shine.
