Many private schools in Dubai have implemented rules that restrict students from using social media apps while on campus. School administrators acknowledge that while social media plays a role in students’ lives, the misuse of such platforms can lead to violations of school regulations and even criminal offenses.
Ghadeer Abu-Shamat, Senior Vice President of Education and Superintendent/CEO of GEMS Al Khaleej International School, emphasized the importance of adhering to social media guidelines to prevent defamation and misinformation. The misuse of social media, such as sharing inaccurate or inappropriate content, is criminalized under UAE’s cybercrime laws. Schools are taking steps to ensure students understand the rules, with many prohibiting mobile phone usage and banning social media during school hours.
Some schools require students to seek permission before posting pictures from school on their social media accounts. The UAE’s social media laws empower schools to take action against individuals who use these platforms to negatively impact the reputation of the institution. School principals are actively working to raise awareness about responsible social media usage through assemblies and workshops. Educating students about the proper use of social media is a priority to create a positive and secure digital environment, allowing students to navigate the online world wisely.
