India Delays Import Licensing for Laptops and Tablets by a Year

India has decided to postpone the implementation of import licensing requirements for laptops, tablets, and personal computers by one year, providing relief to companies like Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, Dell, and HP. The original licensing plan, announced in August, was designed to ensure the entry of trusted hardware and systems into India, promote local manufacturing, and address trade imbalances with China. However, it faced industry objections and criticism from Washington.

In response to these concerns, the electronics ministry has put forward an alternative proposal for a simpler import registration process, set to commence in November. This move aims to streamline the process while maintaining quality standards for imported electronic devices, striking a balance between industry interests and regulatory goals.
