Sharjah Islamic Bank (SIB) in the UAE has launched an innovative app update aimed at making banking accessible to individuals with visual impairments. This pioneering service comes as a response to a visually impaired customer’s feedback, who encountered difficulties using the bank’s app. SIB took this opportunity to collaborate closely with people facing visual disabilities, ultimately resulting in the creation of a screen reader service integrated into their mobile application. Waleed AlAmoudi, Head of Digital Banking at Sharjah Islamic Bank, emphasized that this initiative was developed to enable independent banking for customers with visual impairments. The screen reader allows them to perform various transactions, including checking balances and transferring money, with ease, ensuring both privacy and security.
The introduction of this accessible banking solution has received widespread praise. The Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) commended SIB for its commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. Professor Dalia Abdel Moneim, a specialist in visual disabilities, stressed the importance of empowering individuals with determination across various aspects of life. Furthermore, SIB’s dedication to this cause extends beyond this initiative, as they have previously introduced services such as ATMs designed for people with visual disabilities and those who use wheelchairs. This commitment aligns with the UAE’s vision for equal opportunities and social inclusion, as SIB continues to pioneer banking services accessible to all.
